Transitioning to Over 2's
We aim to make the transition from the Infant and Toddler Room to the Over two room as smooth as possible for you and your child. It is beneficial for children to be provided with opportunities to explore environments where they able to experience interactions with a range of age groups; we especially value whanau being able to be together, and our young children being nurtured by their older peers, as well as being able to learn from each other and teach each other new skills. During a child’s time at Phoenix preschool they will only experience one transition which ensures they develop a true sense of belonging and become to know all of their teachers and environment well. Our separate Infant and Toddler space allows our younger children to have time for peaceful uninterrupted play, where they are free to move and explore safely on the floor at a pace that suits them. We welcome in older siblings and peers to spend quality time with our infants, as well as often venturing out into the over two area to join in with shared experiences and special occasions. As your child nears two we begin to implement our transitioning techniques which include;
Assigning each child with a buddy teacher in the over two area, whose focus is to work alongside your child, as they learn new routines and assist them with feeling a sense of belonging in their new environment. The buddy teacher will also communicate with parents and the primary caregiver, develop a secure relationship with your child and ensure parents and tamariki feel welcome and supported.
Children experience regular visits with their primary caregiver to the Over Two area.
Opportunities to participate in over two daily rituals and routines, such as kai time and group times.
Encouraging independent self-care skills such as handwashing, face washing and caring for belongings.
Opportunities to stay with their buddy teacher for short visits in the over two area; providing children with opportunities to become familiar with the over two room and teachers before their transition.
Parents are well informed and teachers will ensure all changes that will occur once your child transitions are explained and will also be provided in a hard copy format (eg changes to where to put belongings).
A 6 weekly catch up with parents is planned to ensure parents feel confident and supported with their child’s transition.
Children who have recently transitioned are welcome back in the Infant and Toddler room whenever they desire, we are always here with open arms!
